Art
Intent
At Littlebourne, we want children to grow as confident, independent artists by nurturing creativity, curiosity and a willingness to experiment with a wide range of media. Children are taught to follow a clear artistic process: taking in ideas by observing and to ‘magpie’ from artists and the world around them, testing out techniques and materials, and reflecting on their work to refine and improve their ideas. Through this hands-on approach, pupils develop a deeper understanding of how different materials and techniques can be used effectively, learning through exploration and coming to their own conclusions. We value individuality and originality, encouraging children to develop their own artistic voice rather than replicate the work of others. While artists and artistic styles are explored and studied, children are supported to interpret these in their own way, developing confidence in their ideas and creative choices. This approach ensures that pupils are well-prepared for secondary school, equipped with the skills, confidence and enthusiasm to thrive in future Art and Design learning.
Implement
Children are given regular opportunities to explore a range of artistic media each term, allowing skills to be revisited, developed and embedded over time. Our Art and Design curriculum begins in the Early Years, where children are encouraged to observe, explore and experiment with materials, establishing the foundations of the take in ideas, test out and reflect sequence from the outset. From Year 1 to Year 6, all pupils use sketchbooks as a space to gather inspiration, experiment with techniques, review their work and refine their ideas over time. These sketchbooks support progression towards clear end points while celebrating the creative journey. Creativity and individuality are celebrated through class, shared and communal displays, encouraging children to take pride in their work and artistic style.
