Physical Education

Intent

At Littlebourne CE Primary School, we believe it is essential that Physical Education fosters a lifelong love of physical activity and empowers all children to become confident, respectful learners. PE is taught in a way that promotes both physical and mental wellbeing, with fundamental movement skills, knowledge and understanding underpinning all lessons. Children are encouraged to show compassion, perseverance and respect for others while using physical activity as a positive tool to support healthy bodies and minds.

Implementation

Through a wide range of sporting activities, our inclusive approach to Physical Education provides challenging yet enjoyable learning opportunities for all pupils. Carefully planned skill development and progression enable children to flourish and develop a meaningful sense of improvement over time. Lessons promote and celebrate personal achievement while fostering teamwork, resilience and positive sportsmanship. Children are encouraged to respect one another, work collaboratively and support all participants, ensuring PE lessons are inclusive and reflective of our school values.

Impact

Our children will be able to:

  • Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of how to live healthy, active lifestyles.

  • Show self-motivation to participate in physical activity and competitive sport.

  • Display compassion, respect and encouragement towards others, regardless of skill level or ability.

  • Use a range of physical skills confidently, enabling them to enjoy and sustain participation in sport and physical activity beyond primary school.

PE in Action

Recognised with the School Games Mark Silver Award (2024–2025)

Well done to our Year 6 basketball team, who earned a bronze medal in Term 2 after competing against 14 other schools.

Our Physical Education curriculum provides a clear and progressive pathway for pupils’ physical development from the Early Years through to the end of Key Stage 2. Children develop confidence and competence through the progressive teaching of fundamental movement skills, building motor competence across a broad range of activities including games, gymnastics, dance, athletics, swimming and outdoor adventurous learning. Children are encouraged to take part with confidence and enjoyment, working collaboratively and supporting one another as they develop physical skills and resilience. By the time children leave Littlebourne, they will be physically confident, motivated and respectful individuals who value physical activity and are equipped to lead active, healthy lives.
